Apple Gift Cards in Ireland: How to Buy, Use and Redeem
An Apple Gift Card can be spent on almost anything Apple sells: iPhones, Macs, accessories, App Store apps, iCloud+ and Apple Music. In Ireland you buy one at apple.com/ie, in the Apple Store app, or through a multi-brand card such as OptionsCard, then redeem it by adding the 16-digit code to your Apple Account balance. A card bought in Ireland only works on the Irish store.

What an Apple Gift Card actually covers
Apple used to sell two different cards. An iTunes card bought apps, music and subscriptions. An Apple Store card bought hardware. Handing over the wrong one was the most common mistake in the category, and the current Apple Gift Card does both jobs. Legacy Apple Store Gift Cards still exist, so check which one you are buying.
Under Apple's Irish terms the balance can go towards content and services from Apple Media Services, which covers apps and in-app purchases from the App Store, games, films, books, and subscriptions such as Apple Music and iCloud+. It can also go towards products from the Apple online store and the Apple Store app: an iPhone, an iPad, a Mac, an Apple Watch, AirPods, cases, chargers and the rest of the accessory range.
The cards are issued by Apple Distribution International Ltd., registered at Hollyhill Industrial Estate in Cork, so this is a product with an Irish legal footing rather than a US one bolted onto a local site.
Two limits matter at the point of purchase. Some cards state that they can only be used to buy products, and those cannot be spent on apps or subscriptions. And Apple's Irish gift card page states plainly that the card has no expiry, which is unusual and worth knowing if the recipient is a saver rather than a spender. Note that the older Apple Store Gift Card is a separate product with its own, more restrictive terms.
Where to buy an Apple gift card in Ireland
Apple's own channels are the online store at apple.com/ie, the Apple Store app, and the phone line on 1800 92 38 98. Buying direct gets you a digital card you can email to the recipient on a delivery date of your choosing, or a physical card if you would rather hand something over in person.
There is no Apple retail store in the Republic of Ireland. The nearest one is in Belfast, and Apple's own gift card page rules out redemption at Apple resellers, so an Irish recipient is realistically buying online, in the Apple Store app, or over the phone. That is why Apple's Irish terms list those three channels and nothing else. Any Irish gift card page telling you to bring the card into an Apple Store has copied international wording.
Apple Gift Cards are also sold through third-party retailers, and the physical cards on shop racks work the same way once the label is scratched and the code redeemed. Check one thing before you pay: that the card is an Irish one. Apple's terms are explicit that a gift card bought in Ireland can only be linked to an Apple Account in Ireland and can only be used for purchases in Ireland. A card picked up on a trip across the border, or bought from a discount site serving another market, may not redeem at all against an Irish account.
The third route is a multi-brand card. An Apple Gift Card is one of the brands in the OptionsCard catalogue, so a recipient can swap some or all of an OptionsCard balance for one. Apple cards come in fixed denominations there, as they do everywhere, so the amount you send and the amount that reaches Apple will not always match exactly.
Denominations vary by channel. Apple also runs occasional promotions where buying a card inside a set window earns a bonus, but Apple can change or end those at any time without notice, so treat a bonus as a happy accident rather than a reason to buy early.
How to redeem an Apple Gift Card, step by step
The code is 16 digits. On a physical card you may need to peel or gently scratch the label on the back to find it. Once you add a card to your Apple Account the balance moves into your Apple Account balance and the original code stops working, so there is nothing left to hold on to afterwards.
On an iPhone or iPad
Open the App Store, tap the sign-in button or your photo at the top of the screen, then tap Redeem Gift Card or Code. Tap Use Camera and point it at the code, or tap Enter Code Manually and type it in. Tap Redeem.
In the Wallet app
Open Wallet, tap your Apple Account card, tap the More button, then tap Redeem. Use the camera or enter the code by hand.
On a Mac
Open the App Store, click your name or the sign-in button in the sidebar, click Redeem Gift Card, then scan or type the code.
On a Windows PC
Open the Apple Music app or the Apple TV app, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, click Redeem, and follow the prompts on screen.
If it arrived by email
Open the email and tap or click the Redeem Now button.
To check what is left, visit secure.store.apple.com/ie/shop/giftcard/balance or call 1800 92 38 98. Apple's own terms still point people to apple.com/go/gcb/ie, but that address no longer resolves. If a card turns out to be non-functional, Apple's terms entitle you to a replacement credited with the unused balance.
Before you buy one as a gift
An Apple Gift Card is a good present for someone who already uses Apple devices and a poor one for anyone who does not. Everything the balance can buy is sold by Apple. There is no way to move it elsewhere, and the terms rule out cash refunds, resale, transferring an unused balance, and using the balance to buy another gift card.
There is some practical friction as well. At Apple's online checkout a gift card cannot be combined with Apple Pay or PayPal, and payment cannot be split across multiple credit cards alongside it. If the recipient is saving towards something large, that shapes how they pay for the rest of it.
The bigger question is whether Apple is the right guess in the first place. A €200 Apple Gift Card is €200 the person has to spend at Apple. If what they actually wanted was a coat, a weekend away or a new kettle, the card sits in a drawer.
This is where sending an OptionsCard instead is the safer bet, and it does not cost them Apple. An Apple Gift Card is one of over 70 Irish and international brands in the OptionsCard catalogue, so the recipient can swap the value for Apple if that is what they want, or for Currys, DID Electrical, Penneys, Tesco, Brown Thomas, Harvey Norman or Ticketmaster if it is not. They can take some value now and save the rest, split it across several brands, or re-gift part of it to somebody else. There are no fees, it is valid for five years, and it lives in a mobile wallet.
Put plainly: an Apple Gift Card is a decision you make for them. An OptionsCard is the same money with the decision left open.
Not sure Apple is the right guess? Send an OptionsCard instead. They can still choose Apple, or pick from over 70 other brands. Buy an OptionsCard at app.optionscard.ie/buy-gift-card.
